The Erica Koehler Collection is a 3 box collection donated to the Florida International University Special Collections and Archives Department from the School of Nursing. Biographical / Historical
Erica Koehler was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and raised in Camden. She devoted her life to the field of nursing and public health. While already have graduated from St. Luke’s Hospital School of Nursing in New York in 1940, continued her education by graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 1955 from Columbia University and, four years later, earned a Masters of Public Health from Yale University. From there, she spent several years working as a public health consultant for various firms and hospitals, including the State of New York Department of Labor Division. Shortly after, she served as editor and writer for Nursing World Magazine. In 1966 she moved to Coco, Florida, where she worked at the Kennedy Space Center as a chief of nursing services with Trans World Airlines Inc. In 1971 she moved to Miami and taught at the University of Miami School of Nursing and School of the Medicine Department of Epidemiology and Public Health. By 1982, she became a nursing supervisor with the Dade County Department of Public Health- Tuberculosis Control Unit Division of Special Services.
