Scope and Contents

Isle of Pines (Isla de la Juventud) is the second-largest Cuban island and lies almost directly south of Havana and Pinar del Río. At the end of the Spanish–American War under the terms of the Treaty of Paris (1898), Spain relinquished all claims to Cuba. The sixth article of the Platt Amendment, which defined the independent Cuba's boundaries left the ownership of the Isle of Pines undetermined. This resulted in competing claims to the island by the United States and Cuba. The U.S. Hay-Quesada Treaty, signed in 1904, recognized Cuban ownership of the island. In 1907, the U.S. Supreme Court decided, in Pearcy v. Stranahan, that control of the island was a political decision, not a judicial one. Finally the Hay-Quesada Treaty was ratified by the U.S. Senate in 1925 over the objections of the small colony of American planters and traders on the island. The Isle of Pines Collection deals with the correspondence between the US residents on the island and congressional and legislative representatives in the United States regarding the ratification of the treaty.
