James Nelson Goodsell Collection
Scope and Contents
The James Nelson Goodsell Collection documents four decades of Latin American and Caribbean history. Mr. Goodsell was the Latin American correspondent for The Christian Science Monitor news organization from 1964-1985. His archival legacy includes photographs of and transcripts with regional leaders from all across the region, from South America to the Caribbean and Central America.

Biographical / Historical
James Nelson Goodsell was born June 7, 1929 in Evanston, Illinois. He worked at The Chicago Sun in 1945, then joined the New York Herald Tribune in 1953 as the Central American correspondent. He was also a reporter for The Cincinnati Post before joining The Christian Science Monitor in 1956. From 1964 to 1985 he served as its Latin American correspondent. In 1984 he was the chief correspondent and editorial adviser to WGBH-TV in Boston for a Peabody Award-winning "Frontline" series on Central American and the Caribbean. In 1994 Goodsell was appointed the Knight Chair in Journalism in the School of Communication at the University of Miami where he headed the school's Latin American Journalism Fellowship program.

Goodsell's widow, Rhoda Ford, donated the collection to FIU's Latin American and Caribbean Center in 1996.
